The Questionnaire talks to Bob Brockman

This month (February 2008) we talk to Bob Brockman.

When were you first attracted to Buddhism?

I began studying eastern and western philosophy in college. For me, Buddhism offered the most humanity, and most particularly, the most clarity about the human condition.

What made you come to this Buddhist Center?

Kadam Nick and Kadam Lucy were both present at the opening of the West Palm Beach Center. Their genuine warmth and personal welcome ignited my interest instantly.

Were you apprehensive about coming? What did you expect?

At the time, I was concerned that it would be too rudimentary for an “experienced” practitioner like myself. I soon learned that I knew virtually nothing. A most humbling experience, to be sure.

What were your first impressions?

The interaction among teachers and members was so welcome. Other traditions that I had joined seemed so formal and distant by comparison.

What do you like best about coming here?

Besides the loving and caring people, who are very dedicated to Buddha’s teachings, are Geshe Kelsang Gyatso’s books, which provide a comprehensive course of study on the path-all written by one master teacher and monk.

How would you explain the benefits of Meditation to someone new?

Many people think that the goal of meditation is to calm you down. It will certainly do that, and of even greater benefit, it has the potential to transform the quality of your life.

How has what you have learnt here made a difference in your everyday work and home life?

Whenever my mind is ill-at-ease, or “dis-eased”, which occurs often, I know where and whom to turn.

What do you feel Buddhism can offer to the world today?

Buddhism can offer the world a way to comprehend their own mind, a practice which is non-deceptive, and compatible with the truth.

What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhism Saying?

"We should read these ideas (books) with a happy mind, free from distraction and negative views." -Geshe Kelsang Gyatso

What is your favorite Dharma movie, and why?

Life itself can be experienced as a Dharma movie. In fact, it is most helpful to do so. I would choose the film, "Gandhi" as my favorite dharma movie, because the central character comes closest to expressing all that is compassionate and humane in eastern philosophy.

With which historical Kadampa Buddhist practitioner do you most identify, and why?

Although Geshe Kelsang Gyatso is not, strictly speaking, an “historic” figure, it was he who brought this lineage to the West and made it accessible for modern practitioners. To that end, he functions as a spiritual advisor to all who would take him into their hearts and minds.

What's the first thing you're going to do when you become a Buddha?

Either provide direct help, as needed, or encourage people to experience the Buddha’s teachings first hand, for themselves.
