The Questionnaire talks to Kelsang Donwang

This month (Sept 2004) we talk to Kelsang Donwang.

When were you first attracted to Buddhism?

I was first attracted to Buddhism about three or four years ago after reading a book about it. I had heard a little about Buddhism on the radio and was fascinated with the beliefs like reincarnation and karma. They were ideas that I always believed in.

What made you come to this Buddhist Center?

Nothing made me come to a Buddhist Center... I really wanted to go. I wanted to check it out and make sure I really did like it as much as I thought I did.

What were your first impressions when you arrived?

I loved it all of it... the teachers, the people, the atmosphere, everything!

What do you like best about coming here?

Feeling at home, and feeling as though I have just arrived.

How would you explain the benefits of meditation to someone new?

Endless, they will no doubt make you a happier, better person.

How has what you have learned here made a difference in your everyday work and home life?

I am more able to just let go. To let go of the small things and see the bigger picture of life and appreciate everyone in doing that.

What do you feel that Buddhism can offer to the world today?

Peace! What we really need in the world is PEACE!

What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhist quotation?

Although living beings wish to be free from suffering, they run straight towards the causes of suffering, and although they wish for happiness, out of ignorance they destroy it like a foe.

What is your favorite Dharma movie?

There is no such thing as a Dharma movie... the Dharma is in your mind. On those terms I can say Finding Neverland. It's all about death and the power of imagination!

What is you favorite book by Geshe Kelsang?

They are all so good, but my most favorite is Guide to Dakini Land.

With which historical Kadampa Buddhist practitioner do you most identify, and why?

I can't say that there is one that I strongly identify with however, I do feel a very strong connection to Kyabje Trijang Rinpoche, Geshe-la's teacher.

What aspect of the Bodhisattva's way of life most inspires you?

Benefiting all living beings!

What's the first thing you're going to do when you become a Buddha?

Help all my kind mothers attain the same state of Buddhahood!
