The Questionnaire talks to Martha Lopez

This month (December 2007) we talk to Martha Lopez.

When were you first attracted to Buddhism?

My attraction to Buddhism was inspired by an interest in learning to meditate. I read Classical Singer magazine and a couple of years ago, they printed an article on the benefits of meditation for singers. I felt very motivated to try anything that would help my singing! I read a book they recommended and I was immediately interested in learning more.

What made you come to this Buddhist Center?

When Kancha Center was located on US 41, I remember passing it practically every day on my way home from work. Years later, after reading the article I referred to above, I stumbled across an ad for meditation class at Kancha Center. The class was very close to where I live and I decided to check it out!

Were you apprehensive about coming? What did you expect?

I am pretty certain that I was apprehensive in coming, mostly because I had no idea what to expect!

What were your first impressions?

I remember that the people at the reception desk were very friendly and welcoming. I also remember really liking the Buddha statue, and wondering about all the books that were on display. I was also surprised that the teacher was a lay person.

What do you like best about coming here?

I always leave the center smiling, armed with practical advice that I can incorporate into my life immediately. I love all of the teachers and have made great friends at the center.

How would you explain the benefits of Meditation to someone new?

Over time, I came to realize that I felt more "together." Before learning to meditate, I remember feeling nervous quite often. At first, I would only meditate once a week, while in class. This alone, along with learning dharma, made a difference in my life. I began to meditate a little bit during the week and began to note that the undercurrent of nervousness went away. Now I practice daily. My favorite meditation is the one on Taking and Giving. This meditation gives me the opportunity to focus on the happiness of others, not just my own.

How has what you have learnt here made a difference in your everyday work and home life?

I come in contact with many different people every day. The greatest lessons for me have been in learning to be patient with people - especially since I already thought I was a patient person. This is difficult for me and I am constantly tested.

What do you feel Buddhism can offer to the world today?

I feel that people from all religions can benefit from meditation and Buddhist teaching. We live in a stressful, fast-paced society and we could all use a method through which to stay balanced and healthy. Not to mention, good advice on how to better get along with each other.

What is your favorite Kadampa Buddhism Saying?

"Always rely upon a happy mind alone." -Geshe Chekhawa

With which historical Kadampa Buddhist practitioner do you most identify, and why?

Shantideva. I read Guide to the Bodhisattva's Way of Life and was really taken with his straightforward approach! I particularly found Chapter 8 helpful - Relying upon Mental Stabilization.

What aspect of the Bodhisattva's way of life most inspires you?

I am very inspired by the perfection of giving. Giving without expectation or agenda.

What's the first thing you're going to do when you become a Buddha?

During the holiday season, I often struggle with what to buy as gifts for people. At this point in my life, I can't buy spectacular gifts for all my friends and family- really special things that would make them happy. And that's just the thing- I realize that I can't buy them what they really want, which is to be happy. Genuinely happy. And if I were a Buddha, I'd want to help them with that!
